چکیده

For the luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN, the final focusing quadrupole magnets will be exposed to an increased energy deposition in their coil windings. To have a higher heat transfer rate between cable and superfluid helium bath, the cable insulation has been subject of many studies. Improved cable insulation designs, making use of several layers of Kapton tape wound around Rutherford type cables, allow helium to penetrate via micro-channels, which are left open between adjacent Kapton tape sections. To better understand the thermal behaviour at operating temperatures below and some degrees above the helium lambda transition, besides experimental work, several numerical models have been developed to study the influence of the cable insulation. Here we present a new numerical model based on an earlier presented FEM model, which makes use of coupling variables such that the user can easily and quickly change the parameters of interest, giving the possibility to analyse new ideas effectively. © 2014 The Authors. Weak Coupling of Superfluid Helium Confined to Zero Dimensions

Measurements of the specific heat of liquid helium confined in all three spatial dimensions shows an anomalous behavior that suggests a coupling of individual regions of superfluid. This coupling is thought to occur through the shallow channels used to fill the boxes used as confinement structures. This may be evidence of a proximity effect where helium in the larger boxes modifies the behavior...

Parametric study of the influence of cooling channel dimensions on PEM fuel cell thermal performance

In a polymer membrane fuel cell more than half of the chemical energy of hydrogen is converted to heat during generation of electricity. This causes an increase in the cell temperature. The Cooling field design has a significant role in cell cooling. The cell's performance and stability are reduced due to inappropriate heat dissipation. In this paper, the cooling flow and heat transfer in cooli...

Ideal Bose gas in fractal dimensions and superfluid He in porous media

Physical properties of ideal Bose gas with the fractal dimensionality between D = 2 and D = 3 are theoretically investigated. Calculation shows that the characteristic features of the specific heat and the superfluid density of ideal Bose gas in fractal dimensions are strikingly similar to those of superfluid Helium-4 in porous media. This result indicates that the geometrical factor is dominan...

Effect of Corrugated Baffles on the Flow and Thermal Fields in a Channel Heat Exchanger

The performance of corrugated baffles inserted in a rectangular channel heat exchanger is investigated. The fluid flows and thermal distribution are determined via numerical simulations. The working fluid has a shear thinning behavior. The influence of the baffle design is explored, we interest to the “wavy” shape. The corrugation angle of baffle (α) is changed from 0° (i.e. a straight...

Heat Capacity Anomalies of Superfluid 4He under the Influence of a Counterflow near Tl

We present a thermodynamic treatment of superfluid helium in the presence of an applied heat current, Q, which produces a counterflow velocity $ W . We show that the heat capacity can be expressed in terms of the dependence of the superfluid density on $ W . Near Tl, both mean field theory and renormalization group theory give a divergent heat capacity with an exponent of 0.5 at a depressed tra...
